Only two days after postal workers protested against residents whose dogs bite them while they deliver mail, a man was fined $1,000 after he admitted his dog bit a post woman in May.

But Jake Hawkins is leading by example and has already taken steps to ensure such an incident never happens again.

He has paid out $3,200 for a fence and gate around his property to keep his terrier/pit bull cross ?Hazel? out of reach of postal deliverers. And to be extra secure he has also shifted his mail box to a point well beyond the perimeter of the fence around his home in St John?s Road, Pembroke.

Speaking to The Royal Gazette after his appearance at Magistrate?s Court, Hawkins said he had taken action immediately to ensure the safety of visitors and postal workers near his property. The dog is also now taking obedience classes.

Hawkins, 31, had taken Hazel from the SPCA two weeks earlier to give her a home. The 18 month-old dog had behavioural problems as she had been abused by previous owners, he said, and was particularly intolerant of motorcycles and helmets.

The court heard that a woman postal worker was delivering to Hawkins? home when she was bitten on the hand and ankle.

Magistrate Juan Wolffe said: ?All dog biting cases are serious, especially when the victim is a postal worker. The route to the post box must be free from danger. It?s my view that, from the facts, it appears the defendant inherited a dog with a disposition. He has spent $3,200 on fencing and moving the post box and the dog is now taking obedience classes.?

A thief stole around 30 DVDs from a home in Idle Acres, Smith?s parish, on Tuesday.

Police attended the incident at 7.20 p.m., and were told by the complainant that the culprit had gained entry to her home some time between 8.35 a.m. and 6.45 p.m. Inquiries are underway.

A homeowner called the Police after discovering a man trying to break in to his Pembroke home around 3.15 a.m. yesterday.

The victim awoke after hearing noises at the back door. He found the suspect trying to gain entry to his Sharon Lane home.

The resident told the would-be burglar that he was calling the Police, causing him to make off on foot empty-handed.

Officers found a 41-year-old Devonshire man, during a search of the area. Inquiries are continuing.
