Security guards renting hotel rooms - claim

How secure is it? There was no one around when our photographer visited the St. George's Club Med yesterday.

A security supervisor at the Bermuda Security Group is renting rooms at the deserted Club Med resort to selected family and personal friends, a St. George's man claimed yesterday.

The man, who asked not to be named, told the The Royal Gazette: "It is absolutely true," as he referred to the allegation that Jackie Fox is running an illegal boarding house in the East End facility.

According to the man, Ms Fox, who oversees the night time security operation at Club Med, rents rooms for various lengths of time to who ever she feels, although this paper understands that the facility is in a dismal state.

"People who want to live there approach her about rentals all the time," the man said. "Some she accepts, while others she turns away.

"From what I can tell, she is pocketing the money."

But when asked to substantiate his claims, all the man would say was : "I do know that people are living there."

He said that her running the illegal operation causes great concern to the residents of St. George's and they would like the matter investigated.

"If Works and Engineering want to know who is truly living over there, they should ask for a list and then do spot checks," he said.

And while he could not confirm whether the alleged tenants would be otherwise homeless, the man said: "I wouldn't say that. Some just want favours."

But Ms Fox, who has worked for the Bermuda Security Group for ten years, said she was quite disturbed by the "lies" and vehemently denied his claims.

"I cannot do that. I have to go to Works and Engineering over and over about what people are saying," she said.

While she admitted that she lived at Club Med as part of a contractual agreement between her employer and Works and Engineering, Ms Fox was adamant that no one else resided there besides other security staff.

"We get to live there in return for watching the hotel at night. Anyone who lives there is working for the company."

And according to her, this is not the first time she has heard the allegation against her. Ms Fox said she believed she knew where the rumour stemmed from.

"It first started about two months ago when a post lady came to me and said that she had a girlfriend who needed a place to stay.

"But I told her that it was not possible...It was a Government contract and I told her that I couldn't do that, but she was trying to convince me for a week."

Ms Fox said she has caught several squatters living in the hotel, and said often they ask her to turn a blind eye, but she refuses.

"I tell them all the time that I am not doing that," she said. "I do allow people to exercise and walk their dogs on the property, but that's it. I find it silly that people are saying this."

Ms Fox said people often call her asking her to rent rooms, and when she turns them down, she said she is told that "nobody would know."

While she said that her personal view was that Government should consider fixing up certain sections of Club Med to be used as housing, she insisted that she would never violate her company's policy and sublet any rooms.

"This is my job, I can't do that."

The Royal Gazette also spoke with the vice-president of Bermuda Security Group who also denied that allegation and said: "We certainly do not take money for rental. Works and Engineering requested that we have someone live there to watch the place, and that's it."

Calls to the Ministry of Works and Engineering were not returned.
