U-18s face stern test in Sobers tourney

Bermuda's Under-18 national cricket team will face another stern test when they meet powerhouse Jamaica at the Sir Gary Sobers International Schools Tournament in Barbados today.

So far the tourists, competing in what coach Andre Manders has described as "a very tough group", have yet to savour a win in the Caribbean.

Bermuda lost to Dominica Schools, Queens Park Cricket Club, Antigua Combined and Phoenix Academy in their first four Zone A group matches and will again have their work cut out for them today against the Jamaicans who are currently joint leaders of Zone A along with Trinidad and Tobago.

Winless Bermuda remain anchored at the bottom of the pile with five matches left to play.

In their most recent match, Bermuda's youngsters suffered a six-wicket loss against Phoenix Academy with Sinclair Smith top scoring with 25 followed by identical knocks of 20 from Regino Smith and Machai Campbell and another useful 18 by Kevon Fubler.

Marcus Johnson claimed one for 15 and Joshua Gilbert one for 27 to lead the tourists' attack in a losing cause.

Sims slumps

in final round

Pro golfer Michael Sims finished in a tie for 58th at the Southern Open played at the Cabarrus Country Club in Concord, North Carolina.

The former Nationwide Tour player carded a two-over-par 74 to finish in a seven-way tie at 213 for the tournament after enduring a bogey riddled final round.

Sims bogeyed three of the opening nine holes before dropping another shot at the par-five 11th.

The Bermudian's round, however, wasn't all doom and gloom as he birdied the par-four fourth and par-five eighth hole before reeling off a succession of pars heading in.

The past Bermuda Open champion fired a four-under-par 68 on the opening day and followed that up with a one-under -par 71 on the second day to make the cut after a record field of 168 golfers was shaved to 69.

Ted Brown won the 54-hole event by a single shot.

Cyclist Evans

wins bronze

Hayley Evans won Bermuda's first-ever Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships medal by placing third in the time trial event in Curacao, Netherland Antilles over the weekend.

Evans took third place and captured Bermuda's first medal in the regional cycling championships on Saturday morning over the 15 kilometre course while team-mate Sophie Adams finished one place back in fourth.

Josmary Geerman of Aruba was the fastest female in the time trial.
