Saltus students reach out to African children
Saltus students raised $6,300 at three grub-days to help a school in Africa and help Oprah Winfrey build homes for Hurricane Katrina survivors.
Saltus Junior Department Head Christine DeSilva was contacted by Meghan Jones ? who is teaching English and maths in the Mrupanga Primary School in Tanzania ? looking for books, Saltus said on Thursday in a release.
"Mrupanga has roughly 160 pupils in four classes of 40, ages 7- to 14-years-old," Ms Jones said in a release. "The children currently share one text book among four or five and it is difficult for them to learn or reach their full potential. The students and their families are very poor and for many it is a struggle to arrive equipped with an exercise book and pen or to pay their school fees of $5 per year.
"When I see how keen these children are to learn and remember how blessed I was to grow up in Bermuda and attend Saltus with all the facilities it has, my heart goes out to them. There is a lot that could be done for these kids but one of the best ways is to get as many books for them as possible."
After Junior Department and Cavendish students raised $3,512.06 with two grub days and the sale of 'beanie babies,' the release said a presentation was made to Meghan's parents.
In addition to books, Ms Jones said she can now purchase other teaching aids and leather footballs, as well as beds and food for a nearby orphanage.
In addition, Saltus Junior and Senior students raised over $2,800 for the Oprah Winfrey's "Katrina Homes" Project.
Senior students held a Grub Day in March raising $2,220 in just one day for Oprah's "Katrina Homes" project designed to help those left homeless along the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, it said.
And Junior Department students had a Grub Day for "Katrina Homes" on St. Patrick's Day and raised an additional $643.75 for the Oprah Katrina Homes Registry, featured on the Oprah web-site on which the long-standing television talk-show host made the plea ? "Help families make their house a home. Help them create communities that will flourish.
