(BBA) Sprint Championships on Sunday, winning the UPS Front Street Race Series.

In an event that he has virtually made his own, Packwood again fought off all challenges to claim the title as the Island's number one sprinter.

After a strong challenge from Elmore Warren in his qualifying heat, Packwood moved into the final to face newcomer Chris Walker and the experienced Damion Wilson.

Walker, fresh on the scene this year, caught everyone by surprise in his qualifying heat.

Wilson had gained his place in the final in less dramatic, but more controversial fashion when the winner of his heat, Forrest Nusum, was disqualified for failing to abide by the neutral start rule, which required riders to not start sprinting until a pre-designated mark had been reached.

However, Wilson proved worthy of a place in the final as he was the only one able to mount a serious challenge to an in-form Packwood.

As the riders jockeyed for position between the cenotaph and Parliament Street Packwood attacked, pushing a massive gear and reaching speeds in excess of 35 miles per hour.

And while Walker faded, Wilson made a sustained effort to get into Packwood's draft to mount a counter-attack, but could not quite bridge the gap.

Packwood, though, was not the only winner, since many prizes were dispensed during a successful day of racing.

In the female sprints Maggie Hately rode away from Jeanna Jones and Melanie Claude to win, Chad Townsell overcame a strong start by Kris Hedges to grab junior division honours, while Martin Bolton notched an easy win over Louis Muso among the masters category.

Following the excitement of the short sprint events the spectators were treated to three excellent timed criterium races.

Junior riders raced for 15 minutes plus a lap along a one mile course, novices, women, veterans and seniors rode for 20 minutes plus a lap.

Jonathon Herring did more than his share of leading the other riders in the early stages, but paid the price for doing so as he struggled at the end, as Duncan Simons won in a sprint finish.

Among the veterans Vic Ball took top honours, while Troy Trott captured the novice division and Jeanna Jones was first among the women.

In the feature contest involving seniors Damion Wilson proved king, as he crossed the line first ahead of Frenchman Stephan Carpentier and Darren Dowling.
