Wedding couple vow to help New Beginnings

Couple Ally and Jevon who are getting married later this month have decided instead of special gifts for guests they will donate to the New Beginnings campaign.

As happy couple Ally Bolton and Jevon Roberts made plans for their wedding next week, they came to a decision to use the occasion for giving back to the community.Taken by the idea of the New Beginnings $1 Million Campaign, the two have agreed that, in lieu of the traditional favours given out to wedding guests, they would rather make a donation to a worthwhile cause. The campaign in support of education grants for the Island’s at-risk youth is also a fund raiser for the Mirrors programme.Explained Mr Roberts: “I’m a black male, and I try to show the positive things in life to other young men — not so much of what else has been going on in Bermuda. I don’t want our young men to be statistics.“We also wanted to go ahead and try to do something to give back to the community, and I think this was a perfect opportunity. We’re in a position now to do something positive, and this is a positive cause.”The couple, who will tie the knot on September 27, in Warwick’s St Mary’s Church, admit they were also taken with the campaign’s name.“Getting married is a new beginning,” Mr Roberts said. The New Beginnings Education Trust is a charity specifically geared to invest in the young people who have chosen to participate in self-development programmes, such as Mirrors, De Boys’ Day Out Club and Raleigh International.Young adults who have taken part in them often come away with a fresh enthusiasm for education — but few qualify for traditional scholarships.Said Ms Bolton: “The idea actually came when my mother, Lynanne, read in The Royal Gazette about how the campaign was working with Milton Richardson and De Boys’ Day Out Club. She knows Milton and she suggested it to us.“We had already decided not to go with the usual wedding favours. Instead, we wanted to donate to a charity we thought was doing good things for Bermuda.”The two had planned for their Master of Ceremonies at the reception in the Hamilton Princess Hotel to announce the donation. But they figured a little advance notice couldn’t hurt the cause.“Hopefully that will encourage other people out in the public who read about it to go ahead and make donations of their own,” Mr Roberts said. The happy couple, who’ve been together for four years, met as youngsters during a tennis tournament.Ten years later, they happened to meet — Ms Bolton still knew her future husband’s name, although Mr Roberts admitted it took a little while for him to recall someone he had last seen as a teenager.Although they both know people whose lives have been scarred by gun violence, Mr Roberts said: “We were both raised by great families. We’ve been on the fortunate side.“But you can’t help but see that your friends and other family members aren’t as lucky as you are.”All things considered, couples on the verge of hosting a large wedding aren’t known for having deep pockets. However, added Ms Bolton: “We are happy to do what we can to help young Bermudians.”
