Wiffen beats Steede in battle of teachers
In a battle of schoolteachers, Nick Wiffen proved his class by seeing off Albert Steede to take the Division One title at the Shell Division Handicap Squash tournament at the weekend.
The pair were unexpected, but deserved, finalists in the competition held at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association.
Steede, better known for playing cricket with Western Stars, had seen off number two seed Tommy Sherratt while Wiffen had despatched number one seed Ryan Bell in earlier games.
Wiffen had said that Steede was the last person he wanted to play because of the latter's excellent judgement and superb fitness.
However, as it turned out, Wiffen's greater experience - Steede has only been playing the game for a year - saw him win through in three games 15-5, 15-9, 15-13.
Ross Triffitt, Bermuda's director of squash, had praise for the loser.
"He had done extremely well and he was basically winning his matches purely on determination and athleticism," he said of Steede. "He is a very skilful athlete in that he has fantastic hand-eye coordination."
In the Division One consolation final Jan Brewer defeated Stephen Smith in four games, 15-12, 15-14, 11-15, 15-10.
Michael Shrubb claimed the Division Two title seeing off Blair Quested 15-14, 11-15, 15-1, 15-12, while Edwin Wickham was victorious in the consolation, defeating Tony Riker in five games, 5-15, 15-3, 15-11, 3-15, 15-12.
Matt Lawson took the honours in Division Three over Iain Redford, 15-7, 15-12, 15-9 and Graham Counsell defeated Ann Mitchell in the consolation 15-8, 15-14, 15-11.
Jane Forshaw beat Ronnie Viera in Division Four, 15-11, 15-9, 15-11, while in the Juniors Robert Maycock overcame Laura Robinson 15-11, 15-13, 15-14 and Douglas Olson, in the consolation, DaJon Carey 3-15, 15-12, 15-10, 15-12.
