Man found with gun at airport

A man was arrested for suspected firearms possession at L.F. Wade International Airport yesterday afternoon.

The man was a departing passenger and the alleged weapon was not found on his person, according to airport general manager Aaron Adderley.

He told The Royal Gazette: "I can confirm that today there was an incident that required a Police response.

"Security officials at the airport followed proper procedures and notified Police officials accordingly.

"I was satisfied with how the incident was handled. I'm just now waiting for a more extensive report on the incident describing the particulars of what happened and who was involved."

Mr. Adderley added: "The report should indicate for me exactly where the firearm was located, whether in his checked luggage as opposed to any carry-on luggage, and how many firearms were involved and whether or not there was ammunition."

Police issued a statement which read: "A man has been arrested at the L.F. Wade International Airport in relation to a firearm incident that took place around 3.40 p.m. today. An investigation into the matter is under way."

Dunkley could lead UBP in Senate

Former United Bermuda Party leader Michael Dunkley is tipped to take over as leader in the Senate when new leader Kim Swan names his Shadow Cabinet, possibly this weekend.

Defeated Warwick candidates Gina Spence-Farmer and Wayne Scott could join Mr. Dunkley in the Upper Chamber while Alvin Wilson and Charlie Swan, who fought seats in the west end, are also being mentioned in Opposition circles.

However former leader Wayne Furbert said he is not taking a post in the new look frontbench team, citing business commitments while Patricia Gordon-Pamplin has relinquished the Finance portfolio — also because of work issues.

Bob Richards takes over Finance while The Royal Gazette also understands Trevor Moniz has opted not to join the Shadow Cabinet.

Meanwhile, Government House last night announced the reappointment of the three independent senators Carol Ann Bassett, Walwyn Hughes and Alfred Oughton. Mr. Oughton has served as Senate president since 1998.
