Mariner intends to stay with his catamaran
While many will be tightly ensconced in their warm homes as Hurricane Igor blows over Bermuda, one ship captain is planning to stay with his boat.
Denis Owen, who owns Atlantic Mooring Maintenance Limited, had secured his 70 ft tour catamaran UberVida at Ely's Harbour and plans to spend the storm on board.
Mr. Owen's decision to watch out for his boat is not dissimilar to decisions made before Fabian, which was the last intense hurricane the Island has seen.
Seven years ago Edwin (JR) Whitfield stayed aboard the Andrea Christine luxury pleasure yacht alone for the Category 3 storm.
Soon after he told The Royal Gazette he was glad he did as the boat broke its moorings off White's Island and it took all his skill and muscle to keep the boat under control and to stop it from being thrown across the ocean.
Yesterday, Mr. Owen was busy helping others in Ely's Harbour.
"A lot of people at Ely's Harbour are pulling their boats out of the water," he said. "Most are secured already, but there are people definitely scrambling, tying extra lines."
He advised anyone planning on leaving their boats in the water to make an informed decision and "do their due diligence" on moorings.
