Monster trucks a smashing success
Close to 15,000 thrill-seekers flocked to Kindley field this weekend to see the first annual monster truck rally, hosted by Bluegrass Management.
“The response has been overwhelming,” said Bluegrass co-founder, David Greene last night, over the roar of the monster trucks warming up for the Queen's birthday performance in the background.
“When we first put the word out that we were planning the show, feedback was positive, but we didn't expect this.”
Up to one hour before the show was set to begin, people assembled at the gates in order to get good seating.
Mr. Greene said that he and his partners, Michael Jones, Zayne DeSilva and Edwin Cumberbatch were blessed to have brought the rally, which also featured the talents of local motorcross riders, to the Island as seven attempts in the past had been made to bring the spectacular show here.
“From the planning stages to the actual event took three months to materialise. Ministers Dennis and Terry Lister as well as Youth and Sport Minister Randolph Horton were great,” he said.
“They asked us if we had any problems and did their best to help out.
“We met a few obstacles along the way, but they were ironed out quickly.”
He added that besides experiencing a few mechanical glitches, the event went off without a hitch.
“Things went so well that we added another performance on the holiday. During the weekend we had to turn people away, so we decided to host an extra show.
“We ended up building a stadium here, which doubled our expenses. Each night we had to add more bleachers and chairs to accommodate spectators.”
Responding to comments that the memorabilia was expensive - $20 for a miniature monster truck, the same price for a t-shirt - he said that he did not understand the complaints: “I don't see what was wrong with the pricing. If they were in town, they would spend $16 on a t-shirt.”
Mr. Greene hinted that Bermudians have not heard the last from Bluegrass Management:
“The monster truck rally is going to become an annual event,” he said. “We are planning to bring something to the Island this fall.”
He remained tight-lipped about what type of show it will be but guaranteed the whole family can enjoy it.
