DeSilva opts out of race against rival Simpson
The much anticipated rematch between bitter powerboat rivals Tonka Simpson and Stephen DeSilva failed to materialise during last weekend’s Summer National Championships at Ferry Reach.DeSilva showed up but opted against competing in the day’s two FB Class heats that were eventually won by Simpson and co-pilot Seth Chetty in adverse conditions.“The conditions were rough and I am still feeling my aches and pains,” Simpson said. “But I held the boat in and came in at a pretty good ranking and so I was pleased with the day’s performance. We ran the boat perfect, which is what we always try to do.”Relations between DeSilva and Simpson have been strained since the latter clinched class honours in this summer’s Around the Island Race.Tempers flared between the two men following the annual spectacle after DeSilva accused his junior rival of racing with illegal engine parts and submitted a protest to the race committee.Simpson’s 150 V Max engine was subjected to a post-race inspection, that it successfully completed, before the 25-year-old pilot’s original positioning was allowed to stand.Asked was he disappointed to be denied the chance to renew rivalries with DeSilva, Simpson replied: “I wouldn’t say that I was disappointed because I really don’t care if they race or not.”DeSilva declined to comment.Last weekend’s remaining double heat winners were Chris Worboys (A Class), Mark Selly (B Class), David Selley (Stock D Class) and Graham Sutherland (D Class). There was only one heat contested for in both the C and S Classes.Henry Talbot and Howard Ascento claimed C Class honours while Stephen Bridges and Aaron Sims ruled supreme in the S Class. The 2011 powerboat season concludes October 30 with racing to be held off the shores of Dockyard.
