Bermuda riders to take on top Americans

BERMUDA'S best motocross riders will take on US talents Caisey Higgins and Dave Oettel at the revamped Southside track on Tuesday in a holiday special.

While showcases against overseas experts have been a Boxing Day and New Year's Day tradition it's thought to be the first time Remembrance Day has been used for such an event.

It is a sign of the growing popularity of the sport which has seen ten news riders join this year.

Bermuda Motocross Club president Gannon Trott said the newly adapted track was a big plus.

He explained: "It's very safe and a lot of kids are stepping up to the challenge and doing the obstacles."

And he hopes for a big turn out for Tuesday's action involving older riders.

Bermuda has some talented competitors in Otis Ingham, Zico Majors and last year's champion Shakir Smith.

But Trott said: "It is going to be a challenge. I hope my guys can step up to it and produce a good show. I want to be optimistic and say my guys are going to beat them, but we will see."

Bermuda boasts some very talented young riders in Jayire and Senoj Mitchell.

Over the summer Jayire won two championships in Belgium while Senoj won the national championships in the US.

Proud father Shawn Mitchell said: "Those are the biggest amateur events in those parts of the world."

Now the pair are taking a break from overseas competition as they have both moved up bike class ¿ Jayire, ten, is on 85cc bikes while Senoj, seven, has moved up to the 65cc class.

In 2010 Mitchell will take his sons back to the Loretta Lynn event in the US ¿ this year Jayire crashed but Senoj won his group with a perfect one-one-one series of finishes. It saw him featured on the 101 Outdoor Channel on Bermuda CableVision and a DVD of the competition is due out.

"Senoj has been featured in a few magazines because of the Loretta Lynn championships while Jayire had been featured on the Internet with the European championships. He won in the 50cc class and the 65cc class in Belgium ¿ he was the first in history to win two classes in that event," said his father.

A Spanish company paid all the family's expenses for the European trip. "It really helped us out this year. We have a surplus of gear." So he is now offering kids the free chance to try out on two spare bikes and safety gear.

It's gone down a storm with the four to eight-year-olds who, of course, must get their parents consent.

"We teach them the basics and if their parents allow them to compete then away they go.

"A lot of kids don't know how to get involved in the sport. We figured it was something to give back. We did that last race and there was such a big demand we will continue every race day.

l Tuesday's event runs from noon until 4.30. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for the under 12s while seniors get in free.
