Bachelorette doesn't let rain get in the way
It's the Valentine's Day episode of what is supposed to be one of the most romantic shows on television, and the Bachelorette is spending a dream date in Bermuda.
The camera flashes on the "Welcome to Bermuda" sign, then cuts to Jen Schefft - otherwise known as the Bachelorette - bouncing fearlessly over the waves on a jet ski towards the South Shore beach where her date, 25-year old Oklahoma City entrepreneur John Paul is waiting.
Finally, they're alone on a beach - it looks like Jobson's Cove - and they're gazing deeply into one another's eyes. But just as an intense conversation on what John Paul does in his day-to-day life begins, Bermuda's capricious weather strikes a trademark blow: and it starts to pour.
Well, the episode was filmed in November, after all - it was golf and spa season, not beach season.
Wrapped in trademark Fairmont Princess towels, the couple finally abandon the romantic beach setting in a scramble for shelter. Fortunately, the downpour did not dampen the ardour of the dreamy John Paul: " Just so long as I was with her, it was fine".
Last night's episode of ABC's hit reality TV show "The Bachelorette" was expected to be seen by 9 million viewers in the United States and Canada, and the Bermuda date - rain aside - appeared to be a hit.
The rest of the date was peppered with the best the Island has to offer - a moongate ("In Bermuda, it's a symbol of luck in marriage," Jen explains), a blazing bonfire on the beach (isn't that illegal?), their own private fireworks show (literally), and a key to the Fantasy Suite at the Fairmont Southampton should the couple choose to forego their individual rooms (of course they did).
"This was one of the best dates I've ever had," John Paul said. "So romantic," was Jen's comment.
The Bermuda date, organised by the Department of Tourism and its North American public relations firm, Lou Hammond & Associates, was the first of three dream dates the Bachelorette underwent, the two others being in Hilton Head (with Jerry) and on CapeCod (with Ryan).
By the end of the episode, when she had to pick one man to send home, who Jen would pick seemed a complete toss-up.
Fortunately, it appeared the romance permeating Bermuda has a power of its own, rain or shine - in the end, John Paul was one of the two bachelors who got a rose.
Honeymoon in Bermuda?Just a thought.
