Golf tournament lures top executives
forking out $5,000 per team to take part in next month's Bermuda Corporate Charity Golf Tournament at Port Royal Golf Course.
Some will be visiting Bermuda for the first time and are expected to use the tournament as an opportunity to see what the Island has to offer international business.
Mr. David Grisley, tournament co-ordinator, said: "We know that some are staying on an extra few days to look around and have arranged business meetings over here.'' The foreign entry list contains many well-known companies, including Skadden Arps, Citibank, Sedgwick, C.T. Bowring, Babcock & Brown, Mendes & Mount, Mound Cotton & Wollan, the Bank of Ireland and Allied Irish Bank.
Virtually all of them will be sending CEOs, presidents, managing directors or partners, said Mr. Grisley.
"I don't think there's anyone less than a vice-president,'' he added. "We're getting the top people down here.
"The combination of first class entertainment, Bermuda and championship golf is a very attractive combination.
"All the slots for this year's tournament were taken within a few weeks of sending the invitations.
"In excess of 80 executive level people from an impressive array of international companies will be travelling to Bermuda, many for the first time, to participate in the tournament.
"The contacts made through bringing together these companies with the local participants will have an impact on Bermuda's international business sector.'' Most of the money from the tournament will go to the Dublin-based Children's Medical & Research Foundation, whose work benefits children all over the world.
The CMRF has achieved international recognition for developing a treatment for children's kidney disease.
Some of the proceeds will also go to help nine-year-old Bermudian Shalimar Williams, who has a rare physical disorder.
Last year's inaugural event raised $70,000 and organisers hope to top $100,000 this year.
The tournament is organised by a group of local and foreign businessmen, under the chairmanship of Mr. John Kane, who runs The Powerscourt Group management company.
Attorney-General Mr. Walter Maddocks is also on the committee. Sponsorship this year comes from Seagram/Gosling's, XL Insurance, Fourways Inn, Crisson jeweller's, Graham Bell & Co., a London marine broker; Deloitte & Touche (Bermuda) and Rollins Hudig Hall Bermuda.
Other local participating companies include Johnson & Higgins, Lines Overseas Management, Mello Hollis Jones & Martin, Visor Investments, WEIR Enterprises, Willis Corroon, Texaco (Bermuda) and XL.
The event has a distinct Irish flavour, with several former Irish sporting stars among the golfers, including runner Eamonn Coghlan, showjumper Eddie Macken, and rugby stars Fergus Slattery and Micky Quinn.
A prize system has been formulated to ensure that at least 30 percent of participants receive something.
Anyone lucky enough to score a hole-in-one on the picturesque par-three 16th hole will receive a new BMW 850i luxury car.
Other aces will be worth a Rolex watch on the eighth hole and Waterford crystal on the 12th.
The 1993 Bermuda Corporate Charity Golf Tournament is being held on October 19, 20 and 21.
The social highlight of the event will be a black tie, prize-giving dinner at Fourways Inn on October 21, with ex-sportsman Mr. George McNeil the guest speaker.
Mr. John Kane.
