Peace march organiser undaunted by low turnout

Juanita LeShore (far left) the organiser of Thursdays anti-violence march speaks to the few who attended out side of the House of Assembly Lunch time.

Less than ten people turned out for a peace march designed to get the entire community involved in the fight against crime and violence yesterday.

The event was organised by Juanita LeShore, a family friend of shooting victim Kumi Harford and his brother Jakai.

She grew up in the St. Monica's Road area where Mr. Harford was murdered early Saturday morning.

A handful of supporters marched with her from Hamilton Police Station to the House of Assembly.

Ms LeShore detailed a "plan of action" to those present which addressed the role Government, judges, Police and the rest of the community needed to play in the fight against crime.

Suggestions included tougher anti-gang laws, the use of wiretaps, greater rewards for information leading to convictions and Police outreach programmes.

"We need to reach international crime-fighting standard," she said. "The fact that we have to waste taxpayers' money on overseas forensic experts is appalling we should have our own forensics lab."

Sandys resident Suzette Eatherly said she was motivated to attend because her 25-year-old son could also have been killed.

"They shot at my son through his bedroom window," she said. "I came out today to lend my support to this cause. For now, I am one of the 'lucky' mothers whose child survived. I feel for those parents who have lost their sons so unnecessarily.

"They are fighting over nothing. People from Somerset can't even make it to Southampton without fearing for their lives. We need to bridge the gap."

And Donte Hunt, of the Bermuda Democratic Alliance said: "This is the number one issue on everybody's mind right now so I came out to lend my support.

"There are some good ideas in this plan. I think it is spot on. This is a non-political, grassroots effort, it is not just a bunch of finger-pointing at Government."
