Bromby loses out in Cup tie-break

racing victories halted yesterday when he failed to emerge from the qualifying round at the Sunshine Cup match racing regatta in Florida.

Sailing in the Melges 24 craft ,the Bermudian ended up with five wins and three losses during the round robin phase that featured two groups of nine boats.

That record placed Bromby in a three-way tie for first in the group with Andy Beadsworth of England and American Morgan Reeser. However, having lost to both, Bromby was eliminated via the tie-break system, with only the top two qualifying for today's semi-finals.

Semi-finalists from the other group were Peter Holmberg of the US Virgin Islands and another American Steve Grillion.

Despite being ousted Bromby, who had Chuck Millican, Dennis Correia and Blythe Walker as crew, was satisfied with his performance.

"It's all part of the build-up to the Pan-Am Games and I felt it was a decent showing,'' said Bromby, who earlier this month won the Miami Olympic Class Regatta, which followed a similar result at the St. Petersburg Training Regatta.

Bromby is due to return to the Island on Wednesday before flying back to Florida for the Bacardi Cup.
