Father of three dies in road crash
The pregnant fiancee of road victim Omar Sutton has spoken of her devastation at his death, just weeks before their baby is due.
Mr. Sutton, 27, died when his bike collided with a BELCO truck in Paget early on Saturday morning.
Paying tribute yesterday, fiancee April James, who is expecting his third child in July said: “This time is real hard for me, so all of my thoughts aren’t together.
“But I would like everyone to know that Omar was one of the most remarkable, sweet, and loving persons that I have ever met and we were deeply in love with each other.
“He was a great father and husband-to-be.”
Mr. Sutton, from Warwick, is the sixth person to die on Bermuda’s roads so far this year. According to the Police, he was riding west near the junction with Valley Road and Paget Shell gas station, when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle and collided with the truck travelling in the opposite direction.
He was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 3.13 a.m. The truck driver, a 49-year-old man from Sandys, was not injured.
Mr. Sutton had bought an airline ticket the day before his death to visit Ms James, who lives in Alabama and is due to give birth on July 15.
The couple met through a mutual friend when Mr. Sutton visited the U.S. He has two other sons, aged five and seven, from a previous relationship.
Sharing memories of her fiancee yesterday in an e-mail to this newspaper, Ms James said: “We had to use every form of communication since I live in Alabama, USA. I’m going to miss my ‘good morning baby’ text (messages) and my mwah! kisses through the phone. There is so much more going though my head, but it hasn’t all come together just yet.”
She has already chosen a name for their baby – Jaheem Sutton.
And in a poignant message from them to Mr. Sutton, she said: “From me and my unborn, we will miss you very much, and if I don’t do anything else in life I will let my son know how wonderful a man his dad was, and how much he loved him, and be as strong as I can.
“To his mom, brothers, sons, and all his family and friends — I feel the pain and hurt with you guys and we will get through this together.”
Mr. Sutton’s mother, Kathy, was said by neighbours to be visiting family yesterday, and could not be reached at the family home in Spice Hill Road.
According to one of Mr. Sutton’s friends from that neighbourhood, 18-year-old Tishae Davis, the area is feeling the pain of his loss.
“He was real cool and laid-back, he was real kind and a cool person to be around,” she said. “He was always smiling and didn’t let nothing get to him. He was a good friend and I’m going to miss him like crazy.”
Mr. Sutton’s friends have set up a tribute page on the Facebook website for him, which refers to his nickname — “Iced Out Sutton”. Dozens of messages of shock and condolence had been posted by yesterday evening.
Also expressing sadness over the loss were BELCO and the Road Safety Council.
BELCO spokeswoman Linda Smith said: “Everyone is saddened by this tragic accident. Our condolences go out to the family of the accident victim, and our driver is dealing with it the best way he can with the support of the BELCO family.”
Dr. Christopher Johnson, chairman of the Bermuda Road Safety Council, said: “We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim. The untimely death of a young man is a tragedy for our community.
“This sixth road fatality of 2010 highlights the dangers of the roads of Bermuda. Road collisions are preventable and we urge the public to remain vigilant as they motor across the Island. This inexplicable loss of life and productivity to Bermuda should be a major public safety and health issue.”
The Police also extended condolences to Mr. Sutton’s family and friends and called on witnesses to the collision to contact PC Anthony Ricketts on 295-0011.
