The moment of truth is nearly here for 14 male teaching staff at Warwick Academy who have been growing facial hair for charity. The men have been letting their moustaches grow to great lengths to raise money for the annual Movember fundraiser.Scores of individuals and groups across Bermuda are taking part in the event in aid of prostate and testicular cancer.The month-long grow, organised by Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, started on November 1 when the Warwick Academy hopefuls were given a clean shave. And all will be revealed next week when the group gets together to compare their fully-fledged moustaches and celebrate the end of their hairy month.The month of the moustache will end with a Mo-raffle at Warwick Academy where students have the chance to purchase Mo-tickets for 50 cents to vote for their favourite or perhaps most ridiculous moustache. The thinking is that the “mo raffle tickets sold, the merrier” and the winner with the most votes will be announced at Friday’s school assembly. He will then be “crowned” and presented with a sash saying Mr Movember 2011.The Warwick Academy team, named the Mo-sketters, is made up of Andy Fields, Dave Horan, Adam Griffiths, Neville Carley, Ralph Woods, Richard Cunningham, Mark Thorne, Eric Totten, Charles Lowery, Chris Stafford, Mark Hamilton, Raj Goonewardene, Nick Shardlow and Andrew Dobson.The event was organised by deputy principal Mr Fields who has also allowed the school’s motto to be temporarily changed. ‘Quo Non Ascendam’ (to what heights can we not rise?) has been unofficially changed to ‘Quo Mo Ascendam’ (to what height can our moustaches rise?) Mr Fields said the men had enjoyed putting their facial hair to the test during Movember. He said: “These are all stellar teachers of the Warwick Academy staff willing to sacrifice their top lips for the cause.”Mr Fields added that their team philosophy was “multiple mos are better than no mos”.The aim is to raise awareness of men’s health issues and raise money to support men’s health programmes in Bermuda.Team Mo-Skeeters has already raised more than $4,350 but they hope to top the $5,000 mark by the end of the month.It’s not too late to sponsor them so go to www.cancer.bm, click on the Movemeber page then “view someone”.
