St David’s must learn from mistakes against Onions, says Minors

St David's defender OJ Minors

OJ Minors, the St David’s defender, hopes his side can finish the year on a high as they look to bounce back from last week’s thumping at the hands of Flanagan’s Onions.

The teams meet again on Sunday in the Friendship Trophy quarter-finals at BAA Field.

Onions won the last meeting 5-0 thanks to goals from Peter Robey (2), Keston Lewis, Brian Amaro and an own goal from Curtis Symonds.

This time, a place in the Friendship semi-final is at stake, although Minors insists his side’s league campaign is more important that a cup run.

“Last week we didn’t have our full complement of players, so we got what we deserved but there are bigger things on our radar than a run in a cup,” he said.

“We want to get a result in the sense that it will help our form heading into the second half of the season.

“We can sit and talk about all the things we could have done on the day, but the last result is the last result and we have to dust ourselves off and get ready for the next match.”

St David’s sit bottom of the Premier Division table but are just three points adrift of safety.

Included in the list of players missing from St David’s previous match against Onions were Dominique Lambert and Shakil Robinson.

Minors believes his team have to beware of Onions’ physical style of play.

“There are no excuses for the result, but if we can have a few of our key players back in the team, things can turn out differently,” he said.

“Flanagan’s have a very physical approach to the game, something we weren’t used to and it took us off our rhythm.

“We like to move the ball on the ground, and credit to them for not allowing us to do the things we wanted to do.

“We must be more direct and strong willed about what we want to do and go out and put it into play.”
