Bermuda urged to pause for `moment of consciousness'

Sunday -- and back the message: "Drugs don't work.'' The plea comes from the Up With People Bermuda Alumni group, which is staging its second "Moment of Consciousness'' day.

Last year an estimated 33,000 answered the call to pause and reflect on the fight against drugs.

The day featured an action-packed programme of entertainment, interspersed with speeches by special guests.

Among them was Mr. Herman Wrice, the charismatic anti-drugs campaigner from Philadelphia.

This year organisers are staging a more low-key event, with none of the razzmatazz.

"The Moment'' lapel stickers, however, will be distributed throughout the Island tomorrow and Saturday.

In addition, special T-shirts will be on sale at Balloon-Age on Court Street, Hamilton.

A spokesman for Up With People Bermuda Alumni appealed for those residents who took part last year to renew their anti-drugs commitment.

In the past 12 months, he said, a vast array of measures had been taken to rid the Island of the problem.

Government, helping organisations, businesses and private individuals, had all taken important steps.

The spokesman said: "Bermuda -- the real moment of consciousness is far too precious to fade away into nothingness, and besides, the lives we are trying to preserve are worth all the time we can reasonably give.'' He added: "The collective spirit displayed last year was a great moment in the history of Bermuda.

"We want all those who participated to pause and reflect this Sunday, and renew their pledge to fight against drugs.

"We certainly intend to keep up our campaign, and have no intention of fading away. We must make the moment last forever.'' He added the public were urged to attend St. Paul AME Church on Sunday for a special worship service.
