Reg Burrows to be honoured by Wilberforce University
Progressive Labour Party stalwart Reginald Burrows is to be enrolled into the Hall of Fame at Ohio's Wilberforce University.
Mr. Burrows — a former PLP MP and Senator — is recognised for his outstanding services to the university nationally and internationally.
He will travel with his wife Sheila to Las Vegas for an awards ceremony later month. Both are alumni of Wilberforce, which was founded in 1856 and is America's oldest private African-American university.
A letter to Mr. Burrows from the university's awards committee states: "This award is presented on the recommendation of local chapters or individuals to persons who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to promote and support Wilberforce University through both personal service and financial contributions."
Two years ago, Mr. Burrows won Wilberforce's Distinguished Service Award for energising and motivating the alumni and its communities.
House of Assembly Speaker Stanley Lowe, who represented the PLP in Southampton East alongside Mr. Burrows for 35 years, also went to Wilberforce.
Mr. Lowe, who previously won the Outstanding and Distinguished Alumni Award, told The Royal Gazette: "Mr. Burrows is a most worthy recipient of the Hall of Fame Award.
"Congratulations and best wishes for this outstanding honour and achievement bestowed on him; it is well deserved. Whilst serving as a member of Parliament he was an exemplary politician.
"He has always made a contribution to the Wilberforce Alumni and holds it dear to his heart."
