Identity of road victim now known
Police have discovered the identity of a pedestrian killed after he was hit by a car in the early hours of Saturday.
Officers are refusing to name the 41-year-old Southampton resident until next-of-kin have been notified.
The fatal accident took place on a stretch of North Shore Road between Tynes Bay incinerator and Mid Atlantic Boat Club, shortly after 1 a.m.
A 27-year-old man from Hamilton Parish was arrested at the scene on suspicion of impaired driving and causing death by dangerous driving. He was released on Police bail on passing the alco-analyser test.
Police launched a public appeal on Saturday in hopes of discovering who the victim was.
"The Bermuda Police Service would like to thank those members of the public who have come forward regarding the fatal road traffic collision that occurred around 1.15 a.m. Saturday on North Shore Road in Devonshire near the Mid Atlantic Boat Club involving a car and a pedestrian," said a spokesperson yesterday.
Walter Roban, MP for Pembroke East, has described the accident scene as "a racing strip" and says he wants to see road safety improvements.
A 74-year-old neighbour said yesterday: "I didn't see nothing, all I heard was the Police car going past. It was about 1.10 a.m.
"This road is dangerous. If I'm catching the bus east I won't stand at the bus stop, I've started standing inside the boat club's gate.
"They should do something to make it safer as people drive too fast."
Mid Atlantic Boat Club members yesterday were in the dark as to the man's identity.
"No one knows what happened," said one patron.
"He didn't come from around here. All I heard was that he was found lying in the road, practically naked as his clothes were all ripped."
The man's death marks the fourth road fatality this year.
Any witnesses to the accident are asked to contact PC Shem Obeius on 295-0011.
