Few turn out to hear hospitals review
The Bermuda Hospitals Board held the final of their scheduled public meetings last night at St. James? Church Hall in Sandy?s ? unveiling once again a swathe of recommendations for the complete revamping of healthcare in Bermuda.
While more people showed up to listen and voice their opinions than on Wednesday night in St. George?s, numbers were still disappointingly small.
The Estate Master Plan Comprehensive Review at its core recommends the construction of a brand new main hospital by the end of 2012 as well as the creation of three additional comprehensive health centres Island-wide.
The King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute are passed their sell-by-date, the plan concludes, and entirely new facilities are needed if Bermuda wishes to keep pace with a constantly progressing healthcare environment.
After an exhaustive study, the three sites under consideration for a new hospital include 35 percent of the Botanical Gardens, 30 percent of the Arboretum and the existing hospital land.
All three sites have numerous advantages and disadvantages, according to BHB?s architectural and hospital planning consultant Ron McIntyre and significant input from the community is now being sought.
The entire presentation ? as well as feedback forms ? will soon be available online for people to study and assess at www.bermudahospitals.bm.
Next week, will publish an extended feature story on the proposals.
