Nicholl scholarships granted to business, science and law students

Three of the four 2008 Nicholl Scholarship recipients are shown with presenters, trustees Michael Jones (left) and Richard Spurling (right). In the centre are recipients, Matthew Sinclair, Anna Brewin and Ashley Robinson.

Four more students will be on their way to higher degrees after each being awarded $25,000 scholarships through the Nicholl awards.

These Nicholl Scholarships are given in remembrance of Albert E. Nicholl or "Nicky" who arrived in Bermuda from England in 1917 after the First World War as Chief Examination Officer of the Royal Navy Reserve at St. George's.

In his will, the Lieutenant left the majority of his estate in a trust to provide scholarships to young Bermudians who will study either at universities in the British Commonwealth or in the United States.

Always interested in the education of young Bermudians, he gave much of his time and talents to education in Bermuda, in particular at Dellwood School. Through his donations he founded the Nicholl Institute, a manual training school enabling boys to learn a trade and established scholarships at Dellwood, the Berkeley Institute and Saltus to enable students to obtain a secondary education.

During his lifetime Lieutenant Nicholl also contributed to a wide variety of local charities, among other things donating toward a maternity wing at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, which he dedicated to the memory of his father, Sir Edward Nicholl, who was a member of the House of Commons in the UK for two terms.

Yesterday, the trustees of the Nicholl Scholarships announced the recipients who will receive the scholarships for the four years they are studying.

Estina L. Francis is pursuing an MBA concentrating in Finance at Oral Roberts University in the US.

Also studying in the US thanks to the scholarships is Matthew RT Sinclair who hopes to achieve a BSc degree while majoring in Biology at the College of William and Mary.

Anna E Brewin will study for a BA Honours degree in Natural Sciences (physical) at the University of Cambridge in the UK and Ashley MB Robinson will pursue a LLB degree at the University of Bristol also in the UK.
