Apartments planned for historic building

A 200-year-old building in St. George?s could be turned into four apartments should a planning application by WM.E. Meyer & Company Ltd. be successful.

WM.E. Meyer president J. Henry Hayward placed the application for No. 4 Penno?s Drive for a proposed change of use from commercial to residential plus alterations and additions.

?This is a very old building on Hunters Wharf which was built in the early 1800s,? Mr. Hayward said yesterday.

?It is being used as a shop, storage and office, but it is our plan to restore it back to the way it was originally, a residential area.?

He said the application planned to turn Hunter House into four apartments, two upstairs and two downstairs.

The motive for the change of use was demand for housing on the Island, he conceded.

?It has not been utilised,? he said.

?It will make the area quite attractive.?

The ground floor is occupied by Footprints Shoes.

The owners of the shop could not be contacted yesterday.
