Police have arrested a suspect in the murder of Verneil Richardson, who was stabbed to death in the early hours of yesterday. The 21-year-old victim died during a confrontation outside Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club.Adam Leroy King, a 34-year-old Bailey’s Bay resident, yesterday turned himself into police and was subsequently arrested.Mr Richardson, of Hamilton Parish, had been attending the club where “a function” was taking place, according to Superintendent James Howard.“He was involved in an altercation, where he was eventually stabbed,” Supt Howard said.Police were summoned to the club around 1.20am yesterday.Mr Richardson was treated at the scene for puncture wounds, but succumbed to his injuries.Tempers flared as the crime scene was closed off and several people were prevented from leaving by police. Three were arrested for obstruction, during an “affray”.Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said police recognised the inconvenience caused, but added: “We consider the integrity of a crime scene to be of paramount importance.”Police stressed that the stabbing didn’t reflect on the sports club itself.Last night, Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club issued a statement, stressing that it had in place security measures including CCTV cameras and security personnel. The club’s board had met yesterday to confer.Mr Richardson worked as an electrician, according to friends of the family.Public Safety Minister Michael Dunkley sent his condolences to “the family and friends of the young man who was murdered”.“When I heard of this tragedy it was a rough way to start the day,” Mr Dunkley said. “Our community has had relative calm for a number of months and while the family goes through this grieving period I think we have to get out of the way and let the authorities do what they have to do to try to get some closure on this case.“I will have plenty more to say at the appropriate time,” said Mr Dunkley. But in the interim he reiterated the appeal for anyone with information to come forward to assist police with the investigation.“One thing that I have always said is that in a community as small as Bermuda there are always people who know what’s going on,” he said.“As we still have our gun bounty going on and the catchphrase for that is ‘if you know something, say something’, I can tell you right now that I feel very confident there are people who know what happened on Tuesday night.“Come forward, this is not about snitching or pricking. This is about protecting the way of life that we want as Bermudians. So I urge everyone to come forward, make the authorities jobs easier and help bring safety back to our community and some closure to the family.”Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club last night expressed its “heartfelt condolences to the family of Verneil.”The club stated: “It is important that the community understand that such behaviour and acts of violence are in no way tolerated by our organisation. We wish to assure our patrons guest and members that all reasonable steps have been instituted to prevent and deter any such acts upon Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club’s grounds.“Such steps have included the installation of CCTV cameras, positioned throughout the interior and affixed to the exterior of the club, security personnel during all events and additionally policies which have been implemented to deal with any individual who should cause disturbance, breach club rules and generally commit a breach of the peace.“Sanctions resulting from these policies include suspension, expulsion of members and notification to the Bermuda Police Service to prohibit entry onto the club premises for worst offenders.“While no policy or security measures so implemented are capable of recovering the loss of Verneil, we wish to inform the public that every effort has been taken to ward off any such acts or behaviour from occurring. We welcome any suggestions or recommendations from the general public with a view towards improving club security at any time and we wish to assure the general public that we are actively reviewing our existing policies and measures with a view towards improving as best as we humanly can.“The usual Dreamteam Tuesday functions will be suspended pending further notice and we join in with the Bailey’s Bay/Hamilton Parish community as we grieve the loss of one of its young sons with all love and respect.”Anyone with any information is asked to contact the main police number on 295-0011 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.Police also wish to speak with anyone who saw or spoke with Mr Richardson during the day before his death.

The murder of Verneil Richardson outside Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club drew condolences from Progressive Labour Party MPs today.

Area MP Derrick Burgess said he was “deeply saddened and hurt by the news of the tragic death of this young man from Hamilton Parish“.

“Knowing the family, I hope that his parents, grandparents and those who knew and love him find comfort at this very sad time. I extend my personal condolences as well as those of my colleagues in the PLP to them at this time.

“In a community as small as this one, the loss of any person in this horrific manner cannot be tolerated. We encourage witnesses or anyone who can provide details leading to the capture and conviction of the person who committed this heinous act to speak out and assist the Bermuda Police Service in their investigation.”

Both he and Shadow Public Safety Minister Michael Scott expressed sadness over “the violent loss of life of a young Bermudian”.

Mr Scott urged the public to cooperate with the police in their investigation.

The community has a key role to play in supporting the police, telling what they know and standing up for law and good order, Mr Scott added.

Meanwhile, Pastor Leroy Bean told The Royal Gazette that Mr Richardson was “a very good electrician who was up and coming”.Pastor Bean, who yesterday comforted the victim’s devastated parents, added: “My heartfelt condolences go to his mother and father and sister, to his extended friends and family.”
