Sub Sinclair settles it

(after extra time) A header late in the second period of extra time by Sinclair Gibbons settled this FA Cup clash at St. John's Field as Vasco avenged last season's quarter-final loss to Town.

The winning goal came against the run of play in extra time after Town had a goal disallowed, struck the crossbar and had another effort cleared off the line.

The effort that was ruled out became the main focus of Town's frustration after the final whistle as substitute Kris Martin shouted abuse at the officials as he walked off the field. It continued all the way into the clubhouse.

The ruled off effort came 10 minutes into the first period of extra time when Martin, a 70th minute replacement for Heys Wolffe, made a short pass inside the box to Paul Cann who found the net. But linesman Leroy Wilson had his flag up for offside and the effort was ruled out despite town's protests.

However, Town had good chances after that to take the lead for the first time.

Four minutes into the second period Cann was involved in a move on the right after the ball had been knocked back from a corner and his cross into the middle was met by Lionel Furbert on the edge of the box.

Furbert's shot looked headed for the far post before fullback Derek Stapley, still guarding his post, booted off the line after goalkeeper Timmy Figureido was beaten.

Three minutes later Figureido was beaten again but this time Darron Simons' shot from the edge of the box hit the crossbar.

Town looked certain to score and almost did a minute later when a good run down the left flank by Carlos Smith opened the Vasco defence. But Simons completely miskicked inside the box when a firm shot probably would have produced a goal.

Vasco made them pay for the misses four minutes from the end of the second period. Keith Jennings sent in a wayward shot that Kuma Smith kept in at the far side and his cross back into the box was met by Gibbons, an extra time substitution, who steered a downward header into the far corner.

That goal came almost two hours after Vasco took the lead with one of the fastest goals of the season. Just 42 seconds had elapsed when Jennings found the net with a header from a Clay Smith corner on the right which was headed on by Dwight Basden at the near post.

Vasco looked the more hungry of the two teams as a 20-yard scorcher by Kuma smith was tipped over the bar by Town 'keeper Jason Smith after just three minutes.

Town had an effort ruled out in the 14th minute for a foul inside the box after Raymond Beach had scored directly from a corner on the left.

Gradually Town came more into the contest as the game evened out and in the 30th minute they got their reward when midfielder Devarr Boyles scored into the near top corner after a quick move down the left by Town from a throw-in inside their half.

Only a brilliant save by Figureido nine minutes later prevented Town from taking the lead, the 'keeper going to his right to prevent a long range effort from Wolffe from finding the top corner.

Two of the best chances in the second half came in the last 10 minutes of the match as Vasco sub Irving Burgess wasted a left-foot shot after a long pass forward opened the Town defence for him. Then right on full time a turn and shot from Clay Smith dropped just over the bar as Vasco almost produced a late winner.
