Cup giants ready to battle again
night, are hoping to spoil Dandy Town's hopes of a second straight Friendship Trophy triumph when they meet them at BAA Field in tonight's semi-final.
Just 48 hours will have elapsed by the time Vasco run out for their second midweek match and while BAA did not put up much of a fight after Vasco scored the first of their three goals, a tougher resistence is expected from the team that beat Vasco in last year's final.
In fact, both sides have something of a score to settle. They met in both the Friendship and FA Cup finals last season with Town winning the first and Vasco gaining revenge in the more prestigious FA final. Their two meetings this season have finished in a 1-1 draw in the first league match and 2-1 to Dandy Town in the second, just last month.
The key players for Vasco will be striker Dwight Basden and winger Irving Burgess, both of whom scored in the 3-0 win over BAA, as well as full back Earl Richardson -- like Burgess a former Town player.
In the eight matches Vasco have played in 1995, Burgess has scored six goals, including four in the last four games.
Basden, too, has been coming into his own lately with three goals in February and together with Burgess and Corey Hill, the trio have formed a formidable front line. Hill was missing on Tuesday because of injury and is doubtful for tonight's match.
Town also have feared match winners, in the league's top scorer Darron (Duke) Simons who will be joined up front by Carlos Smith and Kris Martin.
Another team jumping right back into action tonight are Southampton Rangers who will meet St. David's in the Shield semi-final as they keep alive their hopes of a Second Division and Shield double. Rangers' hopes of winning all 16 of their league matches were dashed by Social Club on Tuesday night and now they face a tricky match against a St. David's team that beat them the last time they met in a cup match.
That was in the FA Cup preliminary round back in November when St. David's stopped Rangers 2-1 in extra time to become the first, and only, Second Division team to beat them this season.
Even so, form favours Rangers who have more scoring threats in the likes of Alfred Wolffe, their top scorer with 12 goals, Craig Darrell and Jason Raynor who have seven and six respectively this season.
St. David's have rebuilt an exciting young team as they prepare for their return to the top flight. Keith Jennings has fitted in very well since joining them from North Village and is leading their scoring with 12 goals.
