Jemeiko drafted in to replace unfit Bascome
North Village's Jemeiko Jennings is the new addition to the Bermuda squad which travels to Antigua today for the World Cup second round, first leg, qualifier on Sunday.
Jennings, an under-23 team midfielder who was outstanding in last week's Olympic qualifying tournament in Panama, gets his chance at World Cup qualifying level because of the unavailability for various reasons of three of the four professionals.
Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne are staying with their English clubs -- Goater will play an important promotion match for Manchester City on Saturday while Lightbourne is playing at Wembley on Sunday for Stoke City in the Auto Windscreens Shield final against Bristol City.
It is not certain if Lightbourne will be called up for the second leg at the National Stadium the following weekend. Goater is already ruled out because of his preference to remain with his club.
Harrisburg Heat professional David Bascome is the latest casualty to the present squad because of a groin injury, leaving his team-mate Meshach Wade as the only professional is the Bermuda squad of 18.
The only starter from the second leg against BVI at home which Bermuda won 9-0 to be left out is striker Rohaan Simons, who is unavailable because of college. Stephen Astwood, who made his debut in that match, is likely to have college student John Barry Nusum as his strike partner.
Returning to the squad -- though not necessarily regaining his starting spot in the team -- is defender Kentoine Jennings who missed the last match because of a red card he received early in the match in the British Virgin Islands.
Karl Roberts filled in for Jennings and did an admirable job.
Just four members of this squad played in Antigua when they two countries last met in a World Cup qualifier in June, 1992. Goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams, Jennings, Wade and Paul Cann were all a part of that team, with Jennings and Cann scoring in Bermuda's 3-0 win at the Antigua Recreation Ground which is also the country's cricket Test match ground.
The Antigua team is, if reports from Antigua are to believed, a new-look outfit with their emphasis on youth and building for the future.
"We are building for the 2006 World Cup finals when we feel we will have a realistic chance of qualifying for the finals,'' Chet E.P. Greene, general secretary of the Antigua Football Association told the Royal Gazette .
Bermuda's convincing 14-1 aggregate win over BVI enabled the country to rise from 157th in FIFA's world rankings last month to 146th where they are tied with Andorra.
Antigua are 10 places lower than Bermuda, dropping three places the previous month to 156th out of some 202 countries affiliated with FIFA.
