Knockout showdown!

St. David's 118 Bailey's Bay 119-3 A week after losing their Open League title to St. George's, Bailey's Bay bounced back to clinch the Overs crown by superior net run rate over the same team.

And now Bay captain Charlie Marshall says a meeting in the Knockout Cup semi-finals or final between the two teams will decide the best club this season.

The teams finished tied on 13 points in the Overs League with six wins and a no-result -- their eagerly awaited match on June 21 fell victim to the rain after only 2.5 overs into the contest -- so the league had to be decided on net run rate.

"It's unfortunate that game was rained out, that would have been the deciding match and everyone was aware of that,'' said Bay skipper Marshall last night.

"My guys were really looking forward to beating St. George's, they were very excited about the game and prepared themselves like it was a county match and I'm quite sure we would have beaten St. George's on that particular day.

"If we meet them in the Knockout final I'm asking the whole of Bermuda to come out and watch because that will determine the best team on the Island for the 1998 season.'' While St. George's are still unbeaten this season, Bay's only loss came to the east enders in the Open League, so great importance is being placed on their possible meeting in the Knockout Cup.

In the meantime, though, Bay will savour their first trophy of the season.

With a far superior run rate going into the weekend, all Bay needed was a victory at Lord's and it came without too much fuss after St. David's were dismissed for just 118.

Shea Pitcher was high man for St. David's with 34 in 115 minutes, having come to the wicket at number three in the second over when Landro Minors was the first to go.

Pitcher saw further partners depart in the fifth, seventh and 24th overs before he was eventually fifth out on 97. He and O.J.Pitcher put on 64 for the fourth wicket with the youngster scoring 18. Allen Richardson added 20 in the middle order with the next major contribution coming from the extras column where there were 31, including nine wides from Anthony Braitwaite.

Braithwaite claimed three for 20 from 10 overs to lead the Bay bowling while Marshall had two for five from six overs with four maidens.

Bay lost the wicket of Glenn Blakeney on the last ball of the first over when he was caught on the long leg boundary by Shannon Raynor off Rudell Pitcher.

But a second wicket stand of 40 between Roger Trott and Cal Dill steered Bay back on course.

After Dill and Irving Burgess both went for 15, Trott wrapped up victory with an unbeaten fourth wicket stand of 38 with his captain. Trott finished on 49 not out with four fours and two sixes while Marshall hit three fours in his 20.

St. George's 177 Police 138 St. George's made certain of second place in the standings with a 39-run victory over Police at Police Field.

Lionel Cann was the high man for St. George's with 77 while Mark Ray scored 32, the pair adding 87 for the fourth wicket. Dennis Archer led Police bowlers with three for 42 off 8.2 overs.

David Adams claimed four for 30, Kenny Phillip three for 14 and Herbie Bascome two for 21 as St. George's restricted Police to 138 despite a last wicket stand of 23 between Daniel Reece and Richard Austin.

Reece, batting at number six, was high man with 27 not out while Austin scored 22 and Dave Greenidge 24.

Willow Cuts 268 Warwick 193 Skipper Dexter Basden stroked 94 and Trevor Dickinson snatched six wickets for 37 to lead Cuts to this 75-run victory over Warwick.

Basden's knock rescued his team after they were floundering at 41 for five.

Basden and Kevin Fubler (37) added 110 for the sixth wicket, the captain cracking 10 fours and four sixes.

Also among the runs for Cuts were Bergon Spencer with 44.

Allan Wilkinson was the top bowler for Warwick with five for 30 while Kevin Tucker had three for 30.

Richie Foggo and Johnny Nusum led Warwick in their fightback, Foggo scoring 65 and Nusum 51.

Taking wickets in addition to Dickinson were Kevin Fubler with two for 27 while Hinds had two for 45.

Western Stars 312-6 Devonshire Rec. 112 Albert Steede scored 94, Cleon Scotland 61 and Ricky Brangman 58 to lead Western Stars to this 200-run victory.

Devonshire's batting struggled against an attack led by Gary Brangman and Justin Robinson who each took three wickets. With the loss Rec. were relegated to the First Division.
