Barber/Hairstylists set for showdown
With the advent of reality television, the public has been able to get glimpses of what happens behind the scenes in any number of workplaces – from restaurant kitchens to clothing design studios to dog grooming shops.
With that inspiration, the Sharpe Beauty Supplies and Universally Yours L.A. Productions are organising Bermuda's 1st Battle of the Barber/Hairstylists, which will be held in June.
The closing date for entries is June 14, and the competition will take place on June 29 at the Bermuda College Gymnasium, Stonington Avenue, Paget, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Organisers Kimlee Hewey and Latoya Ahknaton are inviting hairstylists and barbers to enter the fray and competed for Bermuda's top hairstyling honours.
"The challenge will be judged by international judges based on originality, timekeeping and professional etiquette," said the organisers.
"This is an opportunity for beauty professionals to showcase their talent and also generate potential new clients.
"If you're going to dream, dream big, it takes the same amount of time."
One of the confirmed international judges is Taliah Waajid.
"She is a world-renowned natural hair care specialist, a licensed cosmetologist, a natural hair care educator, Natural Hair Salon owner and the founder of the World Natural Hair, Health & Beauty Show," said Ms Ahknaton.
"She has over 25 years of hands-on experience with all aspects of natural hair, braiding, locking and weaving."
Prizes include a $1,000 cheque for the overall winner and a gift basket and a trophy for each of five category winners.
Aside from the show, there will be vendors on hand.
Partial proceeds from this event will go to the Stonington Bermuda College Sports Department.
Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and $5 for children. For more information email sharpebeauty@yahoo.com or universallyyours@yahoo.com or telephone Ms Hewey (737-8759) or Ms Ahknaton (504-2654).
