Memorial service for 'Burrows capture' Police inspector

A memorial service has been held for Detective Superintendent Basil Haddrell, a Scotland Yard inspector who coordinated the arrests of Erskine (Buck) Burrows and Larry Tacklyn following a series of politically-inspired murders in the 1970s.

Mr. Haddrell passed on August 14 of this year after a battle with cancer and is survived by his wife Deborah and son William. The service took place at St. Paul's in Paget.

He is best remembered as the brave inspector who helped wrestle a loaded shotgun away from murder suspect Burrows on the infamous night in October 1973 when the assassin was finally arrested.

Mr. Haddrell was a member of the Metropolitan Police, New Scotland Yard from June 1957 to November 1987 and head of the project security for the Channel Tunnel Construction Project, Jubilee Line Extension Project, Rail Link Engineering between November 1987 and November 2007.

John Morrison, who also helped investigate the murders, passed away in Scotland on October 17 at the age of 88 in a nursing home.

Mr. Morrison was the deputy assistant commissioner for the Scotland Yard and worked on many high profile criminal investigations in the 1970s including the Black Panther case and the murder of Governor, Sir Richard Sharples.

He also spent time in St. Lucia where he investigated the murder of Donald Etherington and his wife Marjorie. In his later years, he retired to Lewis, Scotland. He is survived by his wife Annie and their two sons and two daughters.
