Dr. Brown says he will leave office in October
Premier Ewart Brown reiterated he would serve only one term as leader of the Country.
The Premier made the statement at the Bermuda Industrial Union Delegates Conference yesterday.
And he said the public would see the start of a new hotel development in the next few months.
"There is some concern in the air today about whether I am serious about leaving in October," he said. "I love you, really, but let me tell you something the one thing that has been established is I mean what I say and I say what I mean.
"I said I would serve one term before I was elected and after I was elected. When I am gone you will miss me, or you won't, but the fact is I will have come and done my best and then you move on."
He added that the Government has worked hard to lure hotel developers to the Island but that it was difficult given that hotel developments across the world had seen funding evaporate due to the recession. The Barbados Government had to offer a guarantee on a $60 million loan from a Caribbean bank to help restart construction on a Four Seasons hotel development, Dr. Brown added.
But he said that his Government had succeed in attracting developers: "You are going to hear and see hotel development that will show you once and for all that our words about the tourism turn around were not empty."
And he said that the PLP has the talent to run this Country, particularly when people put their party and country before their own interests.
Dr. Brown said he expected a higher level of criticism of his Government, which normally is reserved for the run up to elections, during his last seven months.
"I say, bring it on," he said. "It is one thing to criticise what we do. It is another thing to explain your record when you had the chance.
"Don't fall for it that your Government is spending wildly. Have we made mistakes, yes. Have there been cost overruns on capital projects, yes. But does that mean we are not governing the Country well? No."
