Hodgson takes top editorial role at The Royal Gazette

Award-winning Bermudian journalist Tim Hodgson been appointed editorial consultant for The Royal Gazette, with overall responsibility for its print and on-line editions.A former editor of the weekly Mid-Ocean News, Mr Hodgson, 51, has worked primarily in digital media since 2009, both locally and in the United States.A regular contributor to the Bernews website for the last three years, he also recently assisted former politician and businessman Dr Clarence (Tessi) Terceira compile his forthcoming memoirs.Mr Hodgson’s consultancy period will last until the directors of The Royal Gazette Ltd appoint a new full-time editor.Jonathan Howes, chief executive officer of the Gazette’s parent company, Bermuda Press (Holdings) Ltd, said: “Tim is a hugely experienced senior editor with a solid understanding of the print and digital demands within the business and wider industry.“His mandate includes helping to better align the newspaper’s print and on-line strategies as The Royal Gazette, like all media operations, adapts to the digital era.”Mr Hodgson said: “It is a tremendous privilege to be given the opportunity to become the editorial consultant for The Royal Gazette, a newspaper which enjoys a well-deserved reputation for the high quality of its journalism.“The Royal Gazette brand extends far beyond the pages of the newspaper and its website and is respected across the Island and around the world.“I am looking forward to working with the journalists and the business teams to build on the strengths of that brand and to increase our reach, both in Bermuda and internationally, as the Island’s most respected media organisation.”Educated in Bermuda, the United Kingdom and Canada, Mr Hodgson began his journalistic career as a teenager, working as a summer intern at the Mid-Ocean News.He joined The Royal Gazette on a full-time basis after graduating from the University of Toronto.A series of 1984 reports Mr Hodgson co-wrote with colleague Kevin Stevenson for The Royal Gazette on a leaked Cold War nuclear weapons deployment plan won a top US Inland Newspaper Association award for local government reporting and provided the basis for a Pulitzer Prize-winning analysis in The New York Times.Appointed editor of the Mid-Ocean News in 1989, he worked at that newspaper until it folded in 2009.Mr Hodgson replaces Jeremy Deacon who has served as acting editor of The Royal Gazette for the past six months.Mr Howes added: “I would like to thank Jeremy for his commitment and support in recent months.”
