Police dogs foiled two tourists' plans to bring cannabis into the Island.

Susan Ferranti, of Rhode Island, and Frank Ness, of New Jersey, were caught with the drugs as they arrived at L.F. Wade International Airport on separate flights last weekend.

Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess told Magistrates' Court that Ferranti flew in from Boston on Friday. The 53-year-old was waiting in line at Customs, when K-9 Police drew officers' attention to her.

Ferranti was taken to another room, where her luggage was examined, and then her body was searched. Officers found a clear plastic wrap stuck to her left thigh which Ferranti said contained marijuana.

She was arrested and taken to South Side Police Station where she admitted the drugs were her own. "It's mine, I have it to get high."

Analysis of the drug found it to be 2.93 grammes of cannabis.

Ferranti told the officers that she didn't realise that it was an offence to bring marijuana to the Island.

Ms Burgess said that Ness arrived into L.F. Wade international Airport on a flight from Newark the following day.

He was also alerted to officers by K-9 Police while standing in the Customs control line.

When he saw the officers walking in his direction Ness left the line and headed for the men's restroom.

The officers told him to stop. Ness ignored the command and continued to the rest room.

The officers caught up with him just as he was about to enter a stall.

At that point, he reached into his left shoe and handed the officers a tissue containing plant material, which he admitted belonged to him. He was further searched before taken to South Side Police Station.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Ferranti and Ness $1,500 each.
