Jonae is ready and raring to ride

Bermuda Motorcycle Club's newest member is 16-year-old Jonae Smith who only got her licence to ride three weeks ago.

“Being a girl, a lot of boys say girls can't ride, so I figured I should show them different,” Miss Smith said.

She rode with the club for the first time last Sunday at Morgan's Point but said she was looking forward to riding the new track in Southside as it would be “better, bigger and more entertaining”.

The club has been waiting over a year for Government to let it ride the circuit.

On her Benelli 70cc cycle, Miss Smith proudly displayed a sticker of a dove, which is the logo of team peacemaker.

Fellow peacemaker team-mate and brother Josonne Smith, who has raced his 125cc GP for six years, chose the team name which the whole family was now a part of.

“When Jonae said she wanted to ride I didn't take it too seriously since she was a girl and my sister but when she actually got the bike I was shocked,” her brother said.

Miss Smith's father, Joseph Smith said that he did not want her to get a bike even though he used to be a motocross rider.

“We bought her a nice fast bike thinking that we could scare her out of wanting to ride but the opposite happened and she wanted to ride it even more.”

Miss Smith's mother Yvonne said at first she “wasn't for it”.

“But we have encouraged our children to do positive things to keep them off the streets. We always try to support our daughter in whatever she does with much prayer as long as they're positive things.”

Bermuda Motorcycle Club president and founder David Jones said he was very excited about Miss Smith being in the club.

“Three or four years ago we had another female phenomenon, Carla Johns, who was a positive plug for the group,” Mr. Jones said.

He added that he has raced against females abroad and it was an “awesome sight” to see women participate in a sport thought to be dominated by men.

“But last Sunday, Josae proved she could ride with the best of them and hopefully she will bring in more females,” Mr. Jones said.
