Roy in front as pros head into final round
Scott Roy battled his way to an eight-point lead in the professional division of the Goodwill Tournament as windy conditions played havoc with players' scores during yesterday's third round.
The Bermudian added 18 points to his half-way tally after fighting his way around Tucker's Point, and now has 64 in total. Ed Kirby lies second with 56 points, and Riddell's Bay head pro Brian Morris, the first day leader, is just a point further back on 55.
With wind again likely to be a factor today, and a host of other professionals tied on 52 points, the division is still too close to call.
And the senior division is tighter still, with just four points separating the top four golfers.
Ted Griffin, who has led the division from the start, has a slender one-point lead over Glen Head professional Donny Jarvis who carded an impressive 20 points at Mid Ocean to jump into second place on 50 points.
Close behind are Adam Brown on 48 and Joe Carr on 47.
The team net competition also promises to go down to the wire with Riddell's Bay – Morris, Allan E Richardson, Terry Mullan and Norman Wilson – taking a slim one-shot lead over Port Royal Golf Course going into today's final round. Riddell's Bay are at 33-under par while Port Royal are one back on 32-under par.
Overnight joint leaders Winchester Country Club – James Lane, Charles Hartnett, Carol Lowenstein Jr. and John Whitmore – are still very much in the hunt on 31 under par as are Farm Neck who have the same score.
Meanwhile, in the senior division Bear Hill – Ed Whalley, Cosmo Trapani, Bob Young and Jim Heaslipare – best placed of all the clubs, going into today with a five-shot lead after a nine-under 61 yesterday. Their total of 35-under par keeps them just ahead of Sharon CC – Fran Dzwilewski, Dick Morse, Peter Smith and John Paul Jones – who shot a brilliant 59 yesterdayat Tucker's Point to rocket themselves into contention.
Whatever happens the tournament must be decided today, and any ties will be settled with a play-off at Belmont Hills following the completion of all the final rounds.
