Pimental slips down leaderboard

Bermuda's Cameron Pimental slipped six places down the leaderboard on day two of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships currently underway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Laser Radial sailor placed 33rd and 30th in the 53-boat fleet on Monday to fall from 27th to 33rd overall in the standings.

Tuesday was a rest day while racing was due to resume yesterday with the first and only drop to take place at the end of the fifth race.

Pimental's best finish to date in Brazil arrived during last Saturday's opening day of racing when the promising sailor placed 23rd.

After four races Kiwi Sam Meech leads the Laser Radial fleet by a comfortable margin over nearest rivals Keerati Buralong of Thailand and Valic Matej of Slovenia.

In the battle for the Volvo Trophy, awarded to the top nation, France were the leaders heading into yesterday's third day of sailing in Buzios Bay.

Also competing abroad are the local trio of Lance Fraser, Catalina Sposato and James Anfossi who were due to kick off their bid for Governor's Cup International Junior Match Racing Championships glory in Newport Beach, California yesterday.

The local trio turned heads during this year's Bermuda International Invitational Race Week after finishing runner up in the J-24s behind winner Trevor Boyce.

Skipper Fraser and crew are competing in California in the Alan Andrews-designed Governor's Cup 21 - a racing sloop specifically built for local conditions in Newport Beach.

Accompanying the local trio on the US West Coast is Uruguayan coach Jorge Chiapparro.
