Busy weekend lined up for Test legend Walsh

International cricketing icon Courtney Walsh arrives in Bermuda late tonight to take part in a weekend of festivities organised by the West Indian Association.

The world record-holder for the most Test wickets was scheduled to fly in yesterday and start a busy itinerary of engagements today but plans have been altered because of the delay.

As a result, his cricket clinic for Under-15 players will now take place between 10 a.m. and noon on Monday and not today as originally indicated. The location is yet to be finalised.

Fans will get their first opportunity to meet and chat with the former Jamaican and West Indies fast bowler during an autograph session at C-Travel tomorrow, beginning at 11 a.m.

They can then see the 39-year-old legend in action at Wellington Oval on Sunday when a West Indies' Select XI opposes St. George's Cricket Club as part of celebrations to mark the West Indian Association's 25th anniversary.

The teams will compete for the Courtney Walsh Unity Shield in a 40-over game starting at 12 noon. Admission is $5.

Walsh retired from 17 years of Test cricket last year after the West Indies' home series against South Africa. He concluded his illustrious career with 519 wickets and produced some of his greatest feats within recent times.

On March 27, 2000, in front of his home crowd at Sabina Park, he had Zimbabwean tail-ender Henry Olonga caught by fellow Jamaican Wavell Hinds to surpass India's Kapil Dev as the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket with 435 scalps.

Then, on March 19 last year at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad, he became the first bowler to reach 500 Test wickets when he trapped South Africa's Jacques Kallis leg before wicket. Kallis was also the victim when Walsh overtook the late Malcolm Marshall as the leading West Indies Test bowler in 1998.

The West Indies' Select XI will be chosen from: Courtney Walsh, Barry Richards, Dave Greenidge, Stan Francis, Olwyn Clarke, Donovan Livingstone, Junior Lindo, James Celestine, Ron Maronie Jr, Richard Austin, Junior Watts, Andy Boyce, Jerry Callender and Kenny Phillips.

The team manager is George Rock.

St. George's team will be chosen from: Charlie Marshall, Herbie Bascome, Gregg Foggo, Travis Smith, Gary Brangman, Mark Ray, Philip Burgess, Philip Pitcher, Detroy Smith, Kameron Fox, Ankoma Cannonier, Lewis Foggo, Oronde Bascome, Meshae Paynter and Rodney Trott.
