Jail for drugs
Police officers arrested a Pembroke man after they smelled the distinctive odour of cannabis coming from his car as they talked to him on a minor infraction.
Phillip James Richardson, 27, of Gospel Lane, was yesterday imprisoned for 60 days to be served consecutive to a sentence he is already serving for an unrelated offence.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner heard Richardson was arrested on September 24, when they noted the burned marijuana smell and noticed that the defendant's eyes were glazed. They informed Richardson that he would be searched under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
Crown counsel Cindy Clarke said Police found three home-made cigarettes in his pocket and one partially burned home-made cigarette in the vehicle. The material was found to be 2.24 grams of cannabis.
The defendant told Mr. Warner: "It will never happen again, sir."
Men deny assault
Two men have been charged with unlawfully assaulting a man on October 3 in Smith's Parish.
Dominic Grant, 41, of Angle Street, Hamilton and Pernell Grant, 42, of Camp Hill, Warwick both pleaded not guilty on Friday to the unlawful assault of Leslie Price.
The pair were released on $1,000 bail. Their trial will take place on September 27.
Shop theft denied
A homeless man charged with stealing $300 in cash from a Front Street shop yesterday pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Sinclair Lewis Fox, 57, was charged with allegedly breaking and entering into Carole Holding's shop between January 24 and 25.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner released Fox on $2000 bail with one surety. His trial will take place on September 28.
Tools stolen
Police officers arrested a vagrant after he was seen walking on Par-La-Ville Road with two bags filled with stolen tools, a court heard yesterday.
Robert Hewey, 56, admitted receiving the tools but denied stealing them.
The defendant was arrested on June 28 after officers received a complaint about tools being stolen from Esso Tiger Mart on Par-La-Ville Road. Officers saw the defendant walking with two bags and approached him. They informed him that he would be searched.
During the search, officers found a Makita Hammer Drill, a Makita Saw, a Milwaukee Heat Gun, a three headed drill bit and pliers. The items were valued at $1,174.
Hewey told the court he received the tools from a man named Madeiros with whom he had been working for a few days on the work site.
Officers inquired about the man at the gas station but no one there knew him.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner sentenced Hewey to 30 days imprisonment.
Cycle theft denied
A 16-year-old St. George's youth has denied stealing a cycle from Wheels Ltd. in St. George's.
Gregory Eugene Wade of Barrack Close, pleaded not guilty on Friday to stealing a Peugeot cycle valued at $400 and dishonestly receiving the bike while knowing that it was stolen on June 24.
The defendant was freed on $1,000 bail with one surety. His trial will begin on September 28. Wade is represented by lawyer Charles Richardson.
Theft tools charge
A St. George's teenager pleaded not guilty on Friday to having articles relating to theft in Magistrates' Court.
Dwight Jonckheere Trott, 17 of Redcoat Lane was arrested on June 29. The charges were not being at his fixed abode with articles intended for theft - a wooden hammer and a screwdriver.
The defendant's trial will take place on October 9. He was bailed in the amount of $1,000 with one surety.
