Drewonde Bascome doubtful for Dudley Eve Trophy final
Drewonde Bascome, the Devonshire Cougars striker, remains listed as doubtful for the Dudley Eve Trophy final against holders Dandy Town.
Bascome injured his knee and had to be replaced in the eighteenth minute of the goalless draw away to Devonshire Colts in the Premier Division on Sunday.
He is scheduled to be see a doctor tomorrow to determine the extent of his injury, which threatens to rule him out of the final against his former club at National Stadium on November 11.
“He twisted his knee and it swelled up,” Vance Brown, the Cougars coach, said. “We don’t know what happened after that
“It’s not broken or anything like that. But I don’t want to speculate because I don’t know what it is.
“He is going to see a doctor on Friday, so we will find out more then.”
Bascome played an integral role in Cougars’ impressive comeback win over Somerset Trojans, the seven-times champions, in an evenly fought semi-final at National Stadium on October 28.
He ignited the comeback after converting from the penalty spot and then set up two goals as Cougars came from two down to edge Somerset 3-2 after extra time and secure their eleventh appearance in the final of the competition.
The son of Andrew Bascome, the former North Village and Bermuda midfielder, has been a talismanic presence for Cougars, with five goals in only four appearances.
“Drewonde is a top player and as long as he wants to do it, any team will benefit from his ability,” Brown added. “I am grateful that we had the chance to have him in our team.
“He’s played four games and got five goals, so he is doing well for us.”
Cougars are off to one of their best starts to a season in recent memory, as they are third in the Premier Division, two points adrift of leaders Robin Hood.
“The guys are responding well,” Brown said. “We have some experienced players who are really helping out and doing a good job for us.”
Town secured their spot in the final by thrashing North Village 4-0 in the second semi-final.
Cougars will be aiming for a fifth Dudley Eve Trophy title and Town a record eleventh.
