Bermuda’s budding technology talent of the future was on show at an awards ceremony presented by Business Development Minister Patrice Minors on Thursday as part of the fifth Annual TechWeek.The 2011 Technology Innovation Awards, or TechAwards, which were held at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, recognised the achievements of individuals who produced the best technological designs in retail, business solutions, social networking, environmental technology, local e-commerce websites and Innovation of the Year.This year’s event attracted 122 nominations with the top three from each category invited to the ceremony.The finalists will be given a certificate and the winner of each category will receive the TechAward.“Tonight you will see many instances of innovation at work and play and we all can benefit as the way we do things changes,” said Minister Minors.“Over the past week there have been a wide variety of activities covering technology and its use both in Bermuda and worldwide. People of all ages have learned more about opportunities offered by technology.“Whether it was from a music or art perspective, learning about exciting careers in technology, cyber safety, empowering seniors to get online, we have seen how innovative technology can be for our lives.“I do hope that the opportunities seen during TechWeek 2011 will inspire our young people and other generations to become technology leaders for Bermuda in the future.”Ms Minors said that the TechAwards represented the pinnacle of achievement for the creation and use of technology in Bermuda.“The World thrives on innovation and this competition has continuously shown that we can hold our head high on the international stage,” she said. “It is important that we identify and publicise these achievements so that Bermuda obtains credit for its successes.“The TechAwards are also intended to motivate and encourage more development in the sector.“Technology, its use and availability, is vital to the future success of Bermuda and all Bermudians, and the TechWeek motto everyday; everywhere; everyone encapsulates both its relevance and importance to all.”Among the panel of judges were Paul Coleman, Jamillah Lodge, Chris Worboys, Peter Hebberd, Jennifer Burland Adams and Pat Callender, and judging co-ordinator Marisa Stones.
