St. George's juniors win back `Mini Cup'
Somerset 38 St. George's handed Somerset a comprehensive 65-run thrashing, seizing the cup from the west enders during yesterday's Mini Cup Match at St. John's Field.
After skipper Lamar Richardson (39) had led the way for St. George's, who posted 103 for six from their allotted 25 overs, it was left for Javon Stovell to destroy the Somerset bats with five overs of superb medium pace.
Stovell ran through Somerset's early and middle order with consummate ease, snatching five wickets at a cost of 10 runs.
None of the Somerset batsmen found any way to cope with Stovell, or indeed any of the bowlers, as Jahde Eve top scored with just five runs.
Seven `ducks' were recorded for Somerset, making for a bizarre scorecard that included just eight runs off the bat, and 30 extras. This was highlighted in an opening stand between Darrell and Curtis Hawksworth that yielded 14 runs, but only included one single between the pair.
Also taking wickets for St. George's were Teko Lowe with two, while Richardson, Randy Bean and Kyle Brangman each snared one each.
Earlier Richardson participated in what turned out to be a match-winning 44 run second wicket partnership with Bean (27). The former included six fours in his knock, while Bean slammed three boundaries. However, it was their fine running between the wicket that many found most enjoyable.
Curtis Hawksworth notched three for seven to lead the Somerset attack, while Adrian Levine returned figures of two for 12. St. George's' victory made up for a thorough beating at the hands of Somerset year ago.
