$1.3 million ? and rising!
The Bermuda Red Cross has been given an extra boost for its tsunami relief efforts with a $23,742 donation from KPMG.
The organisation has so far raised $1.3 million to aid victims of the devastating storm which killed hundreds of thousands of people late last year.
In keeping with the team effort involved in raising the money, staff from KPMG's headquarters in Hamilton decided to pay tribute to the work done by the Red Cross with a unique fundraiser.
Senior partner Greg Haycock said he was delighted that KPMG staff managed to raise the money during a silent auction in January.
Each of the firm's 13 partners donated something for staff to bid on.
Some of these unique items included boat trips, stays in private vacation homes and dinners for friends and family.
Meanwhile, Bermuda Red Cross director Ann Spencer-Arscott and her staff have been overwhelmed by the amount of people volunteering their services as delegates in areas devastated by the tsunamis.
She said unfortunately there was a lengthy training process involved in becoming a delegate and that she was discussing the possibility of putting training in place in Bermuda with the British Red Cross in London.
She said she would know more after a meeting in the UK later this month.
"We have everyone's name on record, as do the British Red Cross, and will certainly keep those interested persons informed as things happen," she said.
The Salvation Army in Bermuda has raised approximately $223,000 from donations made to its offices in Hamilton.
But with so many donations being made online the actual amount could not be verified.
The Argus Group has raised $10,668 to be split between the Bermuda Red Cross Asian Tsunami and Caribbean Hurricane Relief Funds.
Argus president and chief executive officer Gerald Simons said: "In December, Argus launched a fund-raising drive for the Caribbean Hurricane Relief Fund on the encouragement of members of staff.
"When the earthquake and resulting tsunami struck Asia later that month we felt that we had to include the survivors of that disaster in our fundraising efforts as well.
"I am proud our employees raised half of the money and the Argus Group was able to match their contribution."
Ms Spencer-Arscott thanked everyone at Argus for their support and said that the funds would be put to good use.
She said: "The Asian tsunami and the Caribbean hurricanes are disasters affecting hundreds of thousands of people's lives.
"With catastrophes of this magnitude the Red Cross aims to deliver effective aid to the people in need.
"Without the generous donations of individuals and companies around the world we would not be able to provide fresh water to the thirsty, injections to stop the spread of disease or shelters to house the homeless. We are extremely grateful to Argus and its employees for their generous support."
