Couple?s drugs trial adjourned until tomorrow

Supreme Court Justice Norma Wade Miller warned a jury that despite the happy atmosphere in the courtroom, they must remember that drugs accused Oshane Eugene Darrell and Jennifer Mederios? ?liberty was at stake?.

Throughout the trial both Crown counsel Carrington Mahoney and Jamaican Queen?s Counsel Frank Phipps have made comments and jokes which left the courtroom in stitches.

At one point yesterday, when Mr. Mahoney asked for the jury to be excused for a brief period he noted that it might be longer than he anticipated because of objections from Mr. Phipps and Mederios? defence lawyer Alan Doughty.

In a friendly jibe aimed at Mr. Phipps and Mr. Doughty, he told the court it might be best to ?add twenty? to the five minutes he would take.

Darrell and Mederios, both of 23 Seawall Drive, deny possessing a large amount of cocaine with the intent to supply, as well as possessing drug paraphernalia on November 22, 2002.

Mr. Mahoney continued to question Darrell about the sale of a jet-ski, which he claims is the source of approximately $11,000 seized from him.

Darrell told the court he kept the money at home in case the man changed his mind. Yesterday the jury was shown documents which Darrell says prove he handed the jet-ski over in September of 2003. Mr. Mahoney questioned him about the reason the jet-ski was not re-licensed until two months ago. Darrell told the court it was not his concern why the man kept the jet-ski unlicensed for so long.

The trial will resume tomorrow.
