Yesterday Police spokeswoman Evelyn James Barnett described the development as "significant''.

"It now brings to a conclusion a series of investigations into the disturbing trend of armed robberies that took place in October/November at several tourist accommodations.'' Ms Barnett said the arrested man had already appeared in court over an attempted armed robbery at White Sands Hotel in Paget on November 27.

He was expected to appear in Magistrates' Court early next week to be charged, she added.

The Loughlands Guest House robbery occurred on November 20.

Seventy-six-year-old guest house owner Mary Pickles told The Royal Gazette she was attacked after answering the front door at 10.30 p.m.

She said the robber escaped with a gold necklace before leaving on a motorcycle.

Mrs. Pickles added she suffered bruising to her neck and a cut below her eye.

The robbery near Stonington Beach occurred on October 24.

A visiting English couple said they were mugged as they walked towards the hotel at night.

They claimed they lost a wallet containing an undisclosed amount of cash, credit cards and other personal items.

In the attempted White Sands robbery, American couple Joseph and Charlotte Banzer, both in their 50s, say they were attacked.

Ms Barnett said intensive investigations had been carried out into the Stonington Beach and Loughlands robberies.

A major Police incident room headed by Chief Insp. Carlton Adams had now received the green light from the AG's Chambers to charge a man.
