Three sent off as Colts clinch cup

(after extra-time) Devonshire Colts won the Charity Cup against a new-look Vasco after extra-time at BAA Field on Sunday night in a fiercely competitive clash which saw three players sent off.

After the teams had finished 90 minutes deadlocked at 0-0, a Shannon Burgess penalty and two further goals from Aljame Zuill earned Colts the Cup.

There was certainly little charity on the field as Vasco ended the match with nine men after two of their summer signings, Kumar Smith and Albert Caisey, received their marching orders. Inbetween Colts' Jamal Simmons was also red-carded.

The flurry of red cards in this season's curtain-raiser brought back bad memories of the ill-discipline which wreaked havoc in the last campaign, but in truth this was not a violent game.

League champions Vasco showed enough to prove that they will once more be a force to be reckoned with, despite the enforced down-sizing of their squad due to a summer exodus of players on transfer releases.

And Colts' solid performance suggests they could be in line to add to their FA Cup and Friendship Trophy triumphs last season.

Regulation time brought little in the way of goalmouth action to entertain a large crowd as both sides played it cagey.

Timmy Figureido pulled off the only serious save of a largely forgettable first half, diving to his right to turn away a low drive by Colts' Jamaine Aberdeen five minutes before the interval.

Three minutes later Colts almost grabbed the lead after an inswinging cross from the left was headed down and wide by Zuill.

The Vasco defence looked a little less rock-steady than usual in the absence of Kentoine Jennings, now of North Village.

Midfielder Meshach Wade dropped back to replace Jennings at centre back, but Wade's combative and energetic presence was sorely missed in the centre of the park.

The skill of former Hamilton Parish player Kumar Smith provided many of Vasco's best moments, as he enjoyed a promising debut.

On 22 minutes, Smith lobbed a bouncing ball into the path of Keith Jennings whose volley flew just too high. Ten minutes later the same two combined again, as Jennings beat Colts 'keeper Troy Hall to a long Smith pass, but his lob dropped wide.

Vasco made the first clear opportunity five minutes into the second half and again Smith was the creator, but Chris Anderson shot beyond the far post from 12 yards.

Smith had been booked for an over-enthusiastic aerial challenge on Hall and a needless eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation with the goalkeeper to follow. And in the 54th minute, referee Irven Simmons dismissed him for a second bookable offence, as he stamped on the floored Aberdeen after the ball had gone.

Simmons followed him off the field 18 minutes later after a reckless challenge which sent Vasco substitute Art Tyrell flying.

With 10 against 10 and players tiring, spaces began to open up and chances came. Jennings' clever flick sent Basden through, but Hall came rushing out of his area to save with his feet.

Zuill shot wide from a good position after a fine run and cross by Colts substitute Keimon Lawrence.

But in injury-time came the miss of the match. Keishon Smith twisted his way into the box and crossed low for Lawrence who somehow scooped the ball over the bar, six yards from the gaping goal.

Nine minutes into extra-time the deadlock was broken. Albert Caisey and Colts substitute Clevon Hill tussled on the edge of the area and when Caisey lost his footing he handled the ball trying to prevent Hill breaking clear.

Referee Simmons pointed to the spot and showed Caisey the red card. Burgess slotted the spot-kick into the bottom right-hand corner and Colts were ahead.

Three minutes later, it was 2-0, as Colts capitalised on the space on the right vacated by Caisey. Hill played in Zuill, who slammed the ball under the body of Figureido.

Vasco appeared dead and buried, but spurred on by spirited displays from new boys Clinton Caisey and Jamel Smith, they pulled a goal back five minutes from time.

Jamel Smith's strong run was ended by a clumsy challenge by Hill and Wade slammed home the resulting penalty, a la Burgess, into the bottom right-hand corner.

But the 10 finally sealed victory over the nine three minutes later, when Keishon Smith burst into the box and clipped the ball deftly over the advancing Figureido. Zuill whacked it into the empty net just to make sure.
