BNAA name trio for Youth Worlds

Middle distance runner Kyrah Scraders, sprinter Taahira Butterfield and triple jumper Justin Donawa will represent Bermuda at next month’s eighth IAAF World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, the Bermuda National Athletic Association (BNAA) confirmed yesterday. The three athletes selected themselves by reaching the qualifying standard in their events during the qualifying period of October 1, last year to June 24, 2013.Scraders, the Young Athlete of the Year, reached the qualifying mark in the 800 metres of 2:13.50 with a PB time of 2:10.93. Butterfield made the standard for the 100 metres of 12.45 seconds with a time of 12.14 and Donawa had a leap of 14.92 metres in the triple jump to comfortably achieve the qualifying mark of 14.60.BNAA President Donna Watson said she was expecting good performances from the trio at next month’s event, from July 10 to 14. At last weekend’s National Champions, Scraders won the 400, 800 and 1,500 metres races to follow up her gold and silver medal performances at the Carifta Games in Bahamas in late March.“We are very proud of these athletes and feel they will perform very well at this event up against the best in their age category in the world,” said Watson.“We will be closely watching Kyrah Scraders as she has had a great year and has come out as number one from Carifta to all of the races she has entered in Bermuda and it will be great to see her compete with the best in the world.”Added Watson: “Justin had to move up to the Under-20 age group at Carifta but during this event he will be competing against athletes in his age category. Taahira has only just returned from a meet in Florida where she ran a PB and she also won the 100 metres National Championships so we are looking for a good performance from her.”The team will be leaving around July 2 as they will be attending a camp for a week before the competition. Travelling with the team will be Brian Wellman as coach and Mia Black as team manager.Meanwhile, long jumper Tyrone Smith had an outstanding performance on the weekend when he reached the ‘B’ standard for the IAAF World Championships, leaping 8.13 metres. The standard was 8.10 metres.Smith’s goal, said Watson, was to reach the ‘A’ standard which would put him in a position to medal.Middle distance runner Aaron Evans continues to improve in the 800 metres as he attempts to reach the Worlds qualifying mark.He recently ran times of 1:48.68 and 1:47.50. The standard is 1:46.20.Evans and Arantxa King will be competing in the Jamaica National Championships. The long jump standard for King is 6.65 metres, with her best leap this season being 6.22 metres.
