Police issue scam warning

Residents were urged last night to be alert to telephone and email scams.

Fraudsters continue to target people via the internet and phone, often claiming to be from recognised companies such as banks, police warned.

Personal information such as bank details, dates of birth, addresses and phone numbers should never by relayed over the internet or by phone to strangers.

“Scammers persist in their efforts, using various means, to try and obtain personal or sensitive information from individuals,” a police spokesman said. “As a result, residents should continue to be vigilant.”

Common scams include misleading emails and calls claiming to be from local banks, asking the recipient to update their security details and inform them of their password.
