Bluebirds prevail in close contest
after a 2-0 win over the Cards on the weekend.
Both teams played well but it was Bluebirds who went ahead when Denise O'Donoghue netted from a right wing cross from Candy Foggo.
Cardinals stepped up the pace with Suelan Veale, Lisa Ray and Jessica Sousa leading their charge. However, Bluebirds' goalkeeper Carla Pedro with some help from defenders Mandy Pantry and Kaywell Outerbridge managed to stave off several attacks.
And despite outstanding play from Brenda Smith and the rest of the Cardinals backline, it was the Blues who scored again. A forward move from Foggo and Sarah Maltby led to a drive into the circle that allowed Melissa Milano to convert despite Cardinals' vociferous protests to the umpire.
In the other A League match Swallows beat Swifts 2-0, both goals coming in the second half. The first was a controversial goal from a scramble in front of the net while the second followed a well-executed penalty corner.
In the B League, Bluebirds produced an upset 1-0 win over previously undefeated Cardinals, with Ingrid McKenna scoring the game's only goal.
It was a bitter pill for Cardinals to swallow, as they controlled the majority of the match. Despite numerous opportunities created by Lisa Baldwin and the forward line, Cardinals were unable to find the net.
Midway through that half Bluebirds capitalised on inexperienced goalkeeping when McKenna placed a shot into the right corner of the net following a scramble in front of goal.
At the other end Bluebirds 'keeper Michelle Romano had an outstanding game, diverting a continuous succession of Cardinals attacks.
Swallows gained another three points with a comfortable 4-0 win over Swifts who were two goals down after just seven minutes, the early goals coming from Kim Stevens and Karen Turner.
Turner added her second at the end of the half and Krista Ward scored a fourth in the 48th minute.
In the Men's League, Wasps were forced to turn to the stands to recruit some young bystanders in order to make up the numbers for their match against Rebels.
The decision proved pivotal as first-time player Sean Outerbridge contributed to both of their goals in a 3-2 loss.
David Gutteridge managed to get Rebels off to a cracking start, scoring the first goal. But Wasps quickly replied through Paul Farrington.
Arguments with the umpires left Rebels one man short when Danny Stovell earned a yellow card and five minutes off the field. But they survived that crisis and Gutteridge netted again to put them ahead.
Wasps equalised again when another shot from Outerbridge was deflected and captain Scott DeCosta neatly tucked away the rebound.
But it was Rebels who went ahead for good when Wesley Scraders scored off a reverse stick pass from Donny Moniz.
By comparison the Upstarts-Police match was a lacklustre affair which ended 1-1. Both goals were scored in the first half, with Lee Udin netting for Police and Neil Caroll for Upstarts.
Young Andy Kerr of Police gave his team the opportunity to win the game when he was awarded a penalty stroke. But Carl Seale failed with his flick which went wide of the left-hand post.
